Philis D Wickens

Auburn - Philis D. Wickens, 55, passed away on November 20 after a beautiful life dedicated to helping others despite the challenges associated with Type 1 Diabetes. She was born September 30, 1958, in Washington D.C., the daughter of the late Philip and Margaret LeVasseur Deane.

Philis grew up in Rumford, Maine and graduated from Rumford High School in 1976. She attended the University of Maine, Farmington, graduating with a degree in Special Education in 1980. Moving to Saco to pursue her career, she found the love of her life, the late George (Skip) Wickens. They were married and moved to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1986.

Philis’ involvements in the Church led her to become a youth pastor. Together she and Skip founded Radiate Ministry, a Christian mentor based ministry for at-risk and fatherless teens. She was a kind, patient person who listened carefully and responded compassionately to those in need. Through her commitment to this ministry, Philis found her true calling, providing spiritual guidance and support to juvenile offenders at the Britt House. She honored these young men, developing personal and spiritual relationships as she nurtured and encouraged them.

She moved back to Maine in March of this year. Her return home was a gift her family cherished. Her mother, Margaret L. Deane, her sister, Andrea Turmelle, brother-in-law, John and nephew, Philip, survive her. She is also survived by her predeceased husband’s cousins, Frank Wickens and Carol Wickens as well as Mr. Wickens’ wife, Cynthia, and nephews Curtis and Cameron. Philis will be greatly missed by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all of Philis’ doctors, nurses, and the staff of Maine Medical Center’s Kidney Transplant Ward. They say a special thank you to Dr. Katarzyna Sadurska, Dr. John Vella and clinic nurse Cheryl Merrill of the Maine Transplant Program and the staff of Hospice House in Auburn.
