

Elmar Stroud Callahan, Jr., age 85, passed away on Friday, May 22, 2015 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, MD. Born in Maple Shade, NJ, he was known as “Junior” to his family and “Spider” to his friends. As a child, he moved to Easton, MD and later settled in Salisbury, MD. He was the son of the late Elmar, Sr. and Mildred Callahan. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Ellen Callahan, and 5 children: daughter, Debbie Burton, and her husband, David Burton, of Olney, MD; daughter, Toni Phippin, and her husband, Keith Phippin, of Easton, MD; son, Elmar “Bunky” Callahan, and his wife, Barbi Callahan, of Salisbury, MD; son, John Callahan, and his wife, Nora Callahan, of Severna Park, MD; and son, David Callahan, and his wife, Marcy Callahan, of Sarasota, FL. Also surviving are 1 sister, Betty Lucero, of Huntsville AL, 11 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, preceding him in death are 4 sisters: Dorothy Ozman, Adele Jefferson, Joan Hickman, Barbara Price, and 1 brother, Joseph Callahan. Mr. Callahan graduated from Easton High School in 1948. He proudly served in the U.S. Marines from 1948-1952 and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict – serving from 1950-1951. He worked at his entire career at C&P Telephone Co of MD, which later became Bell Atlantic and then Verizon, as an Outside Plant Cable Maintenance Manager. He retired in 1988 after 35 years of dedicated service. He was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers and held leadership positions during his membership. He also volunteered coaching youth basketball, baseball, and football for many years at the Salvation Army Boys club, Pony League baseball, and at Saint Peter and Paul Catholic High School. But most of all, he enjoyed being a fan and watching his 5 children compete in the many sports they played. In his free time, he loved traveling with his wife to anywhere inside and outside of this country where there was a beach, working on small engines and repairing anything broken, gardening, reading of military history, and spending time with family. He was a huge sports fan, particularly of the Baltimore Orioles, Baltimore Ravens, and University of Maryland basketball. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, May 29, 2015 at 11:00AM at Bounds Funeral Home, 705 East Main Street, Salisbury, MD 21804. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Coastal Hospice at the Lake, PO Box 1733, Salisbury MD 21802, or a charity of your choice.
