

Mary Carmen Durand passed away peacefully on August 9, 2024 at the Pecan Valley Nursing Home at the age of 89. She was born on September 14th 1934, in San Antonio, Texas. She was in the first full graduating class of Providence High School in 1954. She worked as a civil servant at Kelly Air Force base and retired after 30 years. She was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church, where she played the piano and the organ for many years. She enjoyed music, gardening, sewing, making arts and crafts, and painting. She shared her skills and knowledge with her younger cousins, whom she taught piano and crocheting. She enjoyed traveling with her family to Europe as a young woman.
She was a person of deep faith and prayed daily for everyone in her family. Along with her sister, Mary, she took loving care of her mother in her final years, and never wavered in giving excellent care to her father, who passed away at the age of ninety six. Carmen was the family historian. She loved sharing stories of her grandparents growing up in Mexico in the early 1900’s, and the many adventures of her aunts and uncles. She lived modestly, but took great pride in decorating her home for the holidays, especially the Christmas nacimiento. She was always sincere and compassionate. Above all, she was a loving caring human being. She is preceded in death by her mother, Maria Louisa Murguia, her father, Edmundo Durand, and her sister, Mary Jessie Durand Flis, who was her best friend and lifelong companion.
A rosary for Mary will be held Thursday, September 12, 2024 at 9:30 AM with the funeral mass following right after at 10:00 AM at Christ The King Catholic Church, 2610 Perez St, San Antonio, TX 78207. Burial will follow at San Fernando 2 Cemetery, 746 Castroville Rd, San Antonio, TX 78237.
