Daniel “Danny” Lopez was born in San Antonio, Texas on May 9, 1954, to Homer and Benilde (Vela) Lopez. Danny was their first child and graduated from Holy Cross High School (’72), Texas A&I Kingsville magna cum laude with a Bachelors of Music (‘77) and received a Masters of Music Education from UTSA (‘82). He passed into the arms of our heavenly father on May 2, 2025.
Danny was creative and driven, and was passionate about music, his faith, and organizing people to work together to those ends. Danny started the “Spanish choir”; “Youth choir”; and was instrumental in creating the “Friends young adult group”, all at St. John Berchmans.
Danny was an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, specializing in his beloved French horn. He was a proud Sinfonian and wore his Phi Mu Alpha fraternity pin for every performance. His virtuosity earned him a trip through Europe playing at many of the great halls with the “American Youth in Concert Orchestra”, culminating with a performance at Carnegie Hall. As an adult he was a member of the “San Antonio Municipal Band” and the “San Antonio Master Singers”. He shared his gift by teaching hundreds of young adults as a band director for over 20 years at Rhodes Middle School.
Danny also was an avid reader and had a thirst for knowledge. He would find lists of the “greatest” books in different genres and devour them. He joined book clubs to get different perspectives and share ideas. He loved conversations with people about subjects he didn’t know, but that was an exceedingly small list, as he was very knowledgeable.
Danny was a devoted Roman Catholic, husband, oldest brother, Uncle, godfather and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Benilde, and brother Xavier. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Maria Teresa (Peña) Lopez of San Antonio; brothers and sisters in law Michael (Becky) Lopez; Rene (Kimberly) Lopez; and Omar (Lori) Lopez of San Antonio; Ruben (Geraldine) Lopez of Minneapolis, MN; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Danny, the dogs will miss you and you know I will too.
