Evangeline V. Sanchez entered eternal rest on June 30, 2015 at the age of 95. A native of San Antonio, TX, she was born to Ignacio and Antonia Vega on January 18, 1920 and now reunites with her parents and son; Ruben V. Sanchez. She is survived by her children: Albert V Sanchez (Denise), Jesse V. Sanchez (Mouse) (Bonita), Pete v. Sanchez, Anita S. Ortiz, Antonia S. Plasencia (Jesse), Evangeline V. Arce (Louis), Felipe V. Sanchez; 26 grandchildren; 45 great- grandchildren; and numerous other relatives. Evangeline retired from the Edgewood Independent School District as a teacher’s aide after 23 faithful years. During her seventies and early eighties she was very involved in her community. Ms. Sanchez was president of LULAC Council #4878, District XV under the direction of her niece, Elia Mendoza. As President, she ensured all her members were contacted for meetings and fundraisers and other events such as luncheons held for women and the elderly. The phone bank was important to her, as well as stuffing envelopes to distribute information to all the members throughout the city, keeping them informed of all up to date events. She had a passion for politics and for ensuring that her vote counted. LULAC Council #4947, President Connie Rodriguez, awarded Evangeline with the “Mother of the Year Award” for commitment to her family and community. She made trips to many states and national conventions, traveling by bus, train, car, or however to make herself count in the elections of new officers of the league. She was called “tia” by all her LULAC friends because they knew she enjoyed it. Evangeline was also a devoted family person that loved and enjoyed life. She enjoyed gambling, dancing, and sports; especially the Texas Rangers. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her. The family will be receiving guests on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. A procession will depart the funeral home on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. to celebrate a 10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, 747 SW 39th.
