Gudelia Virrueta Gonzalez was called home by our Lord on December 28, 2016 at the age of 88 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimers. She was born on August 22, 1928 in Tansitaro, Michoacan, Mex. Mrs. Gonzalez immigrated to the US at the age of 17 when she married Luz Trevino Gonzalez in 1946 and they had 5 children over the next 10 years. She stayed home to care for their children while her husband tended to their retail produce business at the downtown market, which is now known as Market Square. She was an accomplished seamstress and made all of her daughters’ dresses, as well as provided the service to friends and neighbors. Mrs. Gonzalez was widowed at the age of 32 and faced the challenge of raising 5 children under the age of 14. Her skill set and drive led her to work at Finesilver Manufacturing Company, after which she worked until retirement from the Levi Strauss Company at the age of 66.
Mrs. Gonzalez’ children are proud of their mother’s courage, strength and resourcefulness for she made it possible for them to enjoy a childhood full of love, support, encouragement and happy times. Through her example, she instilled in them a strong work ethic, as well as an appreciation of gardening. She had a serious green thumb!! She is preceded in death by her parents, Pilar and Victoria Virrueta, her husband Luz Gonzalez, daughter Mary Jessie Roque, grandson Capt. Jason Luz Gonzalez, as well as several siblings. She is survived by her children Joe Gonzalez (Maria), Ralph Gonzalez, Ruben Gonzalez, and Anna Gonzalez Echeverri (Diego); grandsons Pedro Roque III, Jacob Louis Gonzalez (Amanda), and Gabriel Echeverri; granddaughter Victoria Echeverri; great-grandchildren Brandon and Christian Roque, Analyssa, Christian, Alexandria, Audrina and Jacob Luz Gonzalez; great-granddaughter Araceli Roque and numerous other family members who love and will miss her dearly. We would like to express our appreciation to Norma Lopez, Maria Sanchez, as well as the staff at Gentiva Hospice for their love and considerate care of Ms. Gonzalez. Visitation will be held on January 2, 2017 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, followed by Rosary at 7:00 PM at Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 AM January 3, 2017 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 829 Ruiz St, San Antonio, TX 78207 followed by interment in San Fernando Cemetery #2, San Antonio, TX.
