Helen Marie Kaiser Matthews, of Moulton, San Antonio, and, most recently, Richardson, Texas was called home to our Lord at the age of 89 late Monday, August 10, 2015. The funeral service was Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at 12 noon at Roy Akers Funeral Home in San Antonio, Texas. Burial followed at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Visitation with relatives and friends preceded the service. Surviving friends and family, including many nieces, nephews, and their spouses, attended.
Helen Marie was born to George Friederich John Kaiser and Emma Elizabeth (Pietsch) Kaiser on January 27, 1926. She grew up, (the youngest of six children), on her family’s farm by Peach Creek North of Old Moulton, Texas. She was raised there and in Moulton and graduated from Moulton High School.
After graduation, Helen moved to San Antonio to begin working. Some of her first jobs included working in a drug store as a counter sales person and in a food processing position where she graded pecans. She eventually found a position that was a great match for her sharp mind with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Helen quickly advanced through the ranks from operator and route operator and was promoted to supervisor.
Following World War II she met Carl Newman Matthews of Memphis, Tennessee who had served as a bombardier in the United States Air Force. Carl and Helen married in San Antonio April 30, 1948.
Helen continued her work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company while Carl studied to become a Doctor of Chiropractic. After Carl began his practice and as that practice grew, Helen eventually left the Telephone Company to work as her husband’s receptionist and office administrator. Helen continued working with Carl until his death in 1983 and continued some time afterwards managing the office for the Doctor who assumed the practice.
Helen moved to Richardson in 2007 to live with her son Dean and his wife Karen due to health concerns. She died late Monday evening, August 10, 2015 after a brief but rapid decline while recovering at home from surgery and follow-up treatment for a broken hip.
Helen Marie was preceded in death by her parents George and Emma, her husband Carl, and five siblings, Edna Miller, Oscar Kaiser, Hilda Luksovsky, Fred Kaiser, and Harry Kaiser. She was laid to rest joining her husband at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, Section 2, Grave Site 1077.
She is survived by her son, Dean Matthews and his wife, Karen, of Richardson, Texas.
