

Henry “Hank” G. Escobedo, beloved father and coach, entered into eternal rest on Monday, June 4, 2012, at the age of 86. He was born in San Antonio, Texas to parents Fabian and Daria Escobedo on October 10, 1925. Henry was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Velia Escobedo, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth (Jerry) Cherico and Patricia Escobedo; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless athletes that he has mentored throughout his career. Henry was a Basketball Coach at Edgewood High School for 34 years, retiring in 1988. He played Basketball for Lanier High School in 1943 when they were the State Champions, and was commended by Coach Nemo Herrera as being “the best basketball player I have ever coached in High School”. He proudly served our country in the United States Army during WWII, receiving a purple heart and a bronze medal. After the military, he went on to graduate from Trinity University. Henry was nominated for the Latinos in Action Sports Association Hall of Fame, and was a Member of the Texas Coaches Association for 25 years. He was recognized in the Texas Boys Basketball History, by Harold Ratliff as “one of the best basketball players in the state”. The family would like to acknowledge the professionals at VITAS Hospice for all of their kind help. The family will receive friends at Funeraria Del Angel Roy Akers on Monday, June 11, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A procession will depart the funeral home the following morning, Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at 8:00 a.m. for an 8:30 Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 159 Camino Santa Maria.
