Albert Mitchell Hagins (Al) was born February 24, 1926 in Statesboro, GA and passed away November 26, 2014 in Sandy Springs, GA. Al’s wife of 60 years, Mary, preceded him in death. Their youngest son, David, died in the line of duty in 1980 as a Fulton County Police Officer. Al’s eldest son, Mitch, and his wife Donna live in Cumming. Al had six grandchildren-Matt and wife Misty of Lawrenceville; Charles and wife Kristin of Dawsonville; Sarah and husband Wesley of Virginia Beach VA-and four great grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive Al. As a WWII veteran (Navy) then a firefighter with the City of Atlanta for more than 30 years, Al demonstrated hard work and a dedication to others. His legacy – he instilled these characteristics in children and grandchildren. Even in retirement, the hard work continued as Al built his own house in Florida. From there he and Mary managed a travel trailer park in Texas, meeting and helping people for more than 20 years. The last few months were a challenge physically. Even then, he found moments of laughter and memories with those who loved him and those that cared for him. Among those caregivers was the amazing team at The Villas of Canterfield assisted living. The staff there loved and cared for Al in ways that were genuine and heartfelt. They will always be family. Northside Hospital Forsyth including Carolyn Booker and the nursing team, numerous physicians, the ER staff and physicians, the hospital support service staff and others all demonstrated skill and compassion over several stays. Dr. Padhiar and his staff have been exceptional as his hospital and personal physician. The staff at Chestnut Ridge in Cumming was outstanding, helping Al through rehab with success, skill and compassion. Nurses from Amedysis saw Al daily. They were family to him. They were loving and always kind. Halcyon Hospice was professional and kind. All these and more made a difference for Al and his family. The funeral service for Al Hagins will be Monday, December 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Sandy Springs Chapel. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4-6:00 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mt Vernon Hwy, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
