

Bernice Wood of Athens, Georgia, died December 9, 2013. Bernice was
born August 18, 1924 near Vivian, South Dakota. She graduated from
Pierre High School and played basketball for the Pierre Governors,
where she earned the nickname, "Sure Shot Weddell".
Bernice moved to Washington, DC in 1942 and worked for the Veterans
Administration during World War II. While living and working in
Washington, Bernie met many other young people who all remained
friends for decades. She met Marine Corporal Joseph R. Wood from
Denmark, South Carolina while they were both in service at the
Pentagon. Bernie and Joe were married on May 12, 1945.
From 1954 to 2001 Bernie lived in the Sandy Springs area of Atlanta.
She was an accomplished seamstress and a member of several amateur
bowling leagues during those years. In 2001 she moved to Athens,
Georgia where she made many new friends who shared her enthusiasm for
great conversation and card games.
Bernie has two children, Patricia Wood Marshall of Tucker, GA and James
(Jim ) Wood of Athens, GA. She has three grandchildren, Rebecca
Marshall Davis of Marietta, GA, Michael Evan Wood of Boone, NC, and
Charles DeWitt Wood of Athens, GA.
Additionally, she has two great granddaughters, Madeline Josephine
Davis and Ivy Annabella Davis. Bernice is also survived by other
family members, Aurelia Drake Wood and Bonnie Carson Wood of Athens
and Cris Davis of Marietta.
Bernice is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Lena Weddell,
her husband, Joseph Wood, and siblings, Eunice, Clifton, Emylon and
Harlan.

A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2013
at 11:00 AM at The Sandy Springs Chapel 136 Mt. Vernon Highway, Sandy
Springs, GA.
Visitation will follow.
