Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1940, Bettye was the second oldest of six siblings and the oldest daughter. She cherished her family deeply, and is survived by her youngest brother, James Beeson of Florida.
Bettye began her career as a stewardess for American Airlines, where she embraced adventure, grace, and lifelong friendships. In 1962, she married the love of her life, Fred Rockwell Betts, beginning a joyful marriage that spanned 62 years. Together they built a family rooted in love, humor, and steadfast devotion.
A full-time wife and mother, Bettye poured her energy into raising her children and serving her community. She held numerous PTA president roles and volunteered faithfully at church. When her children were grown, she reinvented herself as the beloved “quilt lady,” marketing custom quilts made by North Georgia mountain quilters to designers and decorators throughout Atlanta.
Bettye was also proud to serve a vital volunteer role during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, working as a credential processor for athletes from around the world. A dedicated member of the American Airlines family, she played an integral part in forming and supporting Kiwi Clubs—retired AA stewardess groups—in California, Hawaii, and Atlanta, creating community wherever she lived.
She is survived by her brother, James Beeson; her daughter, Barbara Betts; her son, Rick Betts; her daughter-in-law, Stephanie Betts; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Bettye was a devoted wife, a loving mother for 60 years, and the most adoring “Mimi” to her grandchildren. As one granddaughter lovingly said, “the word ‘No’ was NOT in Mimi’s vocabulary.”
Later this month, her ashes will be spread in Maui—alongside her husband’s, who passed away just eleven months before her. Maui, their second home, held a special place in their hearts, filled with memories they cherished together.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warriors, the Napili Kai Foundation, or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
Bettye lived a life filled with generosity, devotion, and warmth. She is so greatly missed.
Services for Mrs. Betts are private, per the family’s request.
