Dell Marie Farmer Lloyd, beloved wife of Charles Edward Lloyd, died peacefully surrounded by her family, following a brief illness, on November 30, 2016. She was known and loved by many for her vibrant spirit, her bright and curious mind, and an unmistakably recognizable and endearing laugh.
For Dell, life was a fabulous adventure full of opportunities to learn about and experience new things. She jumped into each interest fully and deeply, and was often sought out by friends to consult on topics ranging from gardening to golf tips. A true teacher at heart, her career as an educator impacted the lives of countless young people as she encouraged them to become their best selves. Above all else, she cherished and was cherished by her family.
Born June 7, 1946 in Wilson, N.C. to Hula Baines Leach Farmer and James Oscar Farmer, Sr., she was graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High School in 1964. During her senior year, she was among the top 14 students in North Carolina to receive a superior rating for piano performance. After attending Peace College for two years, she completed her bachelor’s in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned bachelor’s and specialist degrees in library science from Georgia State University, a master’s in library science from Winthrop University, and master’s and specialist degrees in education and administration from Georgia State University.
She married Charles Edward Lloyd October 9, 1971. They lived life together as best friends, with great respect and deep love for one another.
Dell began her education career as an elementary teacher in Atlanta, Ga. She served as a media specialist in Charlotte, NC and in Atlanta, then served for 14 years as an assistant principal for schools in the Cobb County School District. McCleskey Middle School was named a National Blue Ribbon School during her tenure. She was selected to help open Hightower Trail Middle School in 1995, and upon her retirement the school named the Dell Farmer Lloyd Media Center in her honor.
Dell was an avid golfer and her friends at Atlanta Country Club (ACC) became much like family during her 38 years as a member. Only five years after picking up the game, she won a spot to play in the Atlanta Classic Pro-Am. She was the only woman in the field and the third female in history to play in the tournament. She was active in the Ladies Golf Association and won several tournament awards through the years. In 2014, she helped compile and publish the Atlanta Country Club history in celebration of its 50th anniversary. For her love of the game, her superior sportsmanship, and her deep dedication to the club, she was named ACC Golfer of the Year for 2016.
Dell is survived by her husband of 45 years, her brothers Dr. James Oscar Farmer, Jr. (Judy) of Spartanburg, S.C. and William Lee Farmer of Columbia, S.C.; nieces Beth Farmer Lancaster (Andy) of Spartanburg, S.C. and Erin Farmer Lyerly (Will) of Conway, S.C.; and her great-nieces and nephews, William and Kate Lancaster and Conner and Caroline Lyerly, who brought tremendous joy to her life over the last eight years.
