

Edna Umstead Harris, a longtime resident of Sandy Springs passed on June 27th. She was born in Bahama, NC in 1922 and graduated from the Woman's College of North Carolina (Now UNCG). She moved to Sandy Springs in 1950 and was an active member of Sandy Springs United Methodist Church until she moved to Birmingham, AL in 2005. Besides being very active in the Fellowship and Pacesetter's Sunday School classes, she held leadership positions in the UMW and was director of the kindergarten in the late 1950's. She worked for both the Federal Power Commission and the IRS. She worked for 15 years as the business manager of Camp Riverlea, a children's day camp founded by her sister in Bahama, NC in 1971. She was a loving mother, raising 3 children, and a devoted wife. She was an avid reader and read 4-5 books per week up until her passing. She is survived by her children, Joe Harris and his wife Fran of Atlanta, GA, Tom Harris and his wife Joy of Greensboro, NC, Grace Gloss and her husband Gayl of Birmingham, AL; stepson Dale Harris and his wife Carol of Duluth, GA; grandchildren, Ashley Harris of Raleigh, NC, Amy Harris of Atlanta, Kelly Harris of Greenville, SC, Will Gloss and his wife Julie of Cary, NC, Lee Harris and his wife Brooke of Auburn, AL, Jennifer Harris of San Diego, CA, Harris Gloss of Birmingham, AL; and 3 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Basil E. Harris of Atlanta; brother Bernice Umstead and his wife Ione of Durham, NC; sister Betsy Umstead of Durham, NC; stepdaughter June Francis and her husband Charlie of Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the UNCG Excellence Foundation/Umstead Scholarship, Office of Advancement Services, PO Box 26170, Greensboro, NC, 27402 in memory of Edna Umstead Harris. The family will greet friends on Saturday Evening from 5-7PM at the Sandy Springs Chapel. Services will be Sunday June 30th at 2PM at the Sandy Springs Chapel 136 Mt Vernon Hwy, Atlanta, GA 30328. The family would like to receive friends to celebrate her life immediately following the service in the Parlor at the Activity Center at Sandy Springs United Methodist Church.
