

JW was born 01/07/1928 in Sandy Springs, GA to the late Odus W. Self and Jannie Mayfield Self. He attended Morgan Falls Elementary School. During high school he was in ROTC and graduated from North Fulton High School in 1944. At age fifteen, he started working for Fulton National Bank as a teller. Fulton National was short-handed due to WWII and JW was the man for the job and filled the gap. His banking career continued over the next 46 years where he advanced and served as a loan officer and branch manager in Roswell, GA. Fulton National changed names to Bank South. JW had advanced to Assistant Vice President when he retired. JW met Mary Louise Bowman while she was working at Fulton National Bank as a teller. They married in May 1950 and JW built their home on Dalrymple Rd. in Sandy Springs, GA. He was a Mason for more than 50 years at Sandy Springs Lodge #124. As a member of First Baptist Church Sandy Springs, JW taught Sunday School for many years, served on numerous committees, and was a Deacon in the church. After he and Mary moved to Greensboro, GA in 1995 he was a member of Hamp's Sunday School class at First Baptist Church of Greensboro. JW enjoyed antiques and in particular clocks. He was a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors.
Mary, his wife of 60 years, preceded him in death. Survivors include his four children: Jim Self and wife Carla of Sandy Springs, and their two children: Jamey Self Abbott, husband Jason, and two children Regan and Reece. Randall Self. Alice Self Campbell and husband Marion of Spring, Texas and their two daughters: Kristin Campbell Ohmes, husband Robert and three children Breanne, Savannah and Brandon. Rebecca Campbell Bell, husband Clayton, and their two boys Ben and Joe. Pete Self and wife Donna of Cincinnati, Ohio and their three children: Ryan Self and wife Jessie. Trevor Self, wife Katie and two children Hudson and Ainsley. Rachel Self Hammitt an husband David. Nancy Self Morrison and husband Jeff of Spartanburg, SC and their six children: Josh Morrison, wife Ai and two sons Tomo and Haru. Ruth Morrison Carter and husband Drew. Esther Morrison, Joe Morrison, Hannah Morrison, and Abby Morrison.
Visitation will be held on August 29, 2017 from 1-2pm at Sandy Springs Chapel. Followed by the funeral service @ 2pm.
