

Kevin Lucius Athaide returned to his heavenly Father on June 13, 2013, just after celebrating his 80th birthday. He leaves behind his loving wife of 52 years, Winifred (Winnie) Maud (Misquitta) Athaide,three sons Kenneth (Catherine) Athaide of Atlanta, Christopher (Brenda) Athaide of Aliso Viejo, CA, Steven (Christine) Athaide of Maplewood, NJ and daughter Marie Athaide (Jason) Shelburne of Pleasantville, NY. He will be deeply missed by his seven grandchildren: Kevin, Kristin and Conner Athaide; Katherine and Marie Athaide, Elizabeth Athaide and Ian Shelburne. He is also mourned by his brother, Glenn Stanislaus Athaide of Bombay, India and by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Athaide was born in Rangoon, Burma on June 4, 1933 and was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Placidus Athaide and Rose Monica (Gomes) Athaide and by sisters Joyce Mary deSa, Vilma Rose Marshall and Gwen Athaide and by his brother, Clifford Joseph Athaide. He spent his childhood years in Burma, where his father was an engineer with the British Railroads. During World War II, the family escaped the Japanese invasion and returned to Bombay, where he was educated and where he later met and married his wife.
He was educated in schools sponsored by the Society of Jesus, including St. Stanislaus School (Bandra), St. Xavier’s College (Bombay) and Fordham University (The Bronx, NY) from which he earned his Masters in Psychology. Over his forty-year career he was an innovative leader and entrepreneur in the marketing research industry, holding senior positions in several advertising and research agencies in NY, his own consulting firm and, later, in government and industry.
Throughout his life, he was very active in the ministries of the Catholic Church. For more than 15 years, he and his wife were leaders in the Marriage Encounter movement and, more recently, he helped establish the Our Family program at St. Brendan’s Church. He loved to travel and enjoyed trips to religious and historical sites in Europe and Asia and to Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico and Hawaii for vacations.
The family will greet visitors on Tuesday, June 18 from 7pm – 9pm at the Sandy Springs Chapel (136 Mt. Vernon Highway, Sandy Springs) and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 19 at 10am at St. Jude’s Catholic Church (7171 Glenridge Drive, Sandy Springs) with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Our Family program at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church, in Cumming, GA or to Catholic Relief Services (www.crs.org)
