There was never a love so powerful, safe, and beautiful than when my grandmother held me at night. She took away not just mine, but everyone around hers' sorrow and never failed to be a woman that I admired more than anyone else in the world, and to be honest, I still do. Geum Yeong, known to the world as "Mama Chang", was born on June 16 of 1947, and took charge the minute she came. She whizzed through the goals she kept her eye on, and loved like she had already accomplished them; I hope she knows that she's moved mountains on Earth and touched the sky in our hearts. Coming from the depths of the cosmopolitan cities of Seoul, Buenos Aires, Chicago, Detroit, and São Paulo you would think such a city gal would be molded to a flashy, urban life. But Mama Chang's passion lied in every pink azalea that bloomed in her thriving garden, nurtured by her green thumb. Her love knew no boundaries, and certainly no discriminations. Every country she moved, she made friends and changed lives. Something about her embodied the kind of angel that was and always would be a person who lived in a world of compassion and bountiful love. Every blanket she tirelessly crocheted, and each soup she made, was out of her unconditional care; I can say for all who knew her, that it will live within us for as long as, well, ever. Anyone who lived around her was always well fed at the very least, because goodness, was she a cook. Fond memories of cooking with her in a warm kitchen, lit by an overhead lamp that was almost as bright as her smile is a part of our family made immortal by our memories, which I know she wants us to share for the many years to come. We are still with her in so many ways, from each of her rescue animals that she pampered till they shined with perfection, to the moral values that stand strong inside us in the darkest times. So as I announce these things about her, I know she encourages you to smile, breathe, and march on like she always did. This is a celebration, not a mourning, of a life well lived and loved, and there is nothing she would have liked more for everyone than for us to have learned that. For the most beautiful, intelligent, strong and admirable woman I have ever met... A wonderful mother and grandmother of
Julie, Jenny and Irene Chang. Please join us in the celebration of her life on Sunday, March 6, 2016. The service will begin at 3:00 pm in the Sandy Springs Chapel, followed by a receiving of friends and fellowship.
