

Robert Laird Boehmig, age 91, died on February 22nd, 2011 in Sandy Springs. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Thrower Boehmig. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Janice Sense Boehmig; daughters Marie Devaney of Magnolia, Texas, and Erika Bockelman of Dripping Springs, Texas, and her spouse; sons Paul, Robert and David, of metro Atlanta, and Mark, of Gainesville, and their spouses; 13 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild. He was beloved and revered, and his memory will be honored for generations to come.
Mr. Boehmig was born in Pittsburgh on August 31st, 1919. He graduated from Carnegie Tech and Georgia Tech with advanced degrees in construction engineering, and served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Germany during WWII. In 1948 he joined an Atlanta engineering firm, and took part in designing the Alexander Memorial Coliseum. He opened his own engineering practice in 1959, where he designed the first wave-action swimming pool in the U.S., held several patents and authored technical articles. Throughout his career he also designed office buildings, correctional facilities, and over 50 church and Sunday school buildings.
He was a longtime member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge, Sigma Nu Fraternity, VFW, Exchange Club and several engineering societies, and was a former president of the Consulting Engineers Council of Georgia.
Mr. Boehmig’s memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. at the Sandy Springs Chapel, with interment following at Arlington Memorial Park. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5-7:00 p.m. at Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mt. Vernon Hwy, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
