Sara Jane Bohrer Warnken, a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, friend and Christian, passed away peacefully the evening of June 10, 2022 after a multi-year battle with dementia. She was 84 years old.
Sally was born August 10, 1937 in St. Louis, Missouri to Dr. Edward Royse Bohrer and Lois Wood Bohrer. Her siblings, of which she was eldest, were Dennis Bohrer, Linda Bohrer Schokker, and Thomas Bohrer. As a young child, Sally and her family moved frequently while her father served as an army doctor during World War II. She spent most of her older childhood years living in Jefferson, Missouri. Sally spoke with pride of her father whose practice often consisted of carrying his black medical bag to make house calls in the community.
Sally attended the University of Missouri and earned an advanced degree in nursing. She was also an active member of the Delta Gamma sorority where she made many friends. She met her future husband, Ronald Lee Warnken, at a fraternity - sorority social. The couple married in October of 1959 in Jefferson City, Missouri and remained devoted as a couple for sixty-two years.
Sally became a loving, full-time mother once their first son, Ronald Royse, was born in 1966. The family was complete with the birth of their second son, Lawrence Gregg, in 1969. After moving from Missouri to New Orleans, Sally’s family eventually settled in Marietta in 1978. They found a spiritual home for their family at Peachtree Presbyterian Church, where they have been active members for over 40 years.
Sally possessed a compassionate love of life, people, animals, nature, music, art and history. Always staying true to her devoted role as spouse and mother, she also gained great satisfaction in serving others. She was the longest tenured volunteer at the Chattahoochee Nature Center, where she led hikes and shared her love for the animals with both children and adults. She offered many service hours to the cat shelter at Good Mews, where she was willing to do any service that benefited the animals. Her love of both music and service are further evidenced by her participation in the bell choir at Peachtree Presbyterian Church and by playing her harp for hospice patients throughout the Atlanta area. She served as a youth Sunday school teacher for a number of years. Her creativity shined through her artwork, whether it was in her watercolors or in working with ceramics. Sally’s greatest legacy lies in her gift for always seeing the bright side in life and the positive side in people. She was especially gifted in finding the humor in everything, and she loved a good belly laugh when hearing and sharing her stories. She was a shining example of a loving and compassionate human being.
Sally is survived by her husband of 62 years, Ronald Lee Warnken; children, Ronald R. (Jean Hearn) Warnken of Marietta and Lawrence Gregg (Adrienne Stout) Warnken of Woodstock; as well as grandchildren Matthew, Sara Beth, Samantha and Cameron Warnken.
Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at Sandy Springs Chapel. The funeral service will be held June 15 at 11:00 AM at Sandy Springs Chapel, followed by an Interment at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may honor Sally with contributions to Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell, Georgia or Good Mews in Marietta, Georgia.
