

Walter Brandt Mackenzie, retired President of Plantation Pipe Line Company, died on Saturday, November 15, 2014. He was the oldest son of Walter Jackson Mackenzie and Marie Brandt Mackenzie. Born on 14 March 1921, he was a native of Freeport, Long Island, N.Y. and always considered himself fortunate to have grown up in his home village on wonderful pre-World War II Long Island. A resident of Atlanta since late December 1959, Mackenzie was a long-time member of Living Grace Lutheran Church in Tucker, GA and predecessor congregation, St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Atlanta, GA. He was an Honorably Discharged U. S. Coast Guard veteran with World-War II sea duty in the American, Europe-Africa-Mideast, and Pacific theatres of war. He was a graduate of New York University’s former School of Commerce and its Graduate School of Business Administration. Mackenzie joined Plantation Pipeline Company in January 1960 after 20 years of service with Standard Oil Company (New Jersey)., now Exxon Mobil Corporation, and held several executive positions with Plantation prior to his election as President of the company in September 1964. He retired in 1980 after a 40 year career in the petroleum industry. Active for many years in the American Petroleum Institute, Mackenzie was a former chairman of its Central Committee for Pipeline Transportation. At various other times during his career, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Oil Pipelines, a trustee of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia S.C., Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Georgia Foundation for Independent College Funds of America, a former member of Cherokee Town and Country Club, he served a term as club treasurer. Walter dearly loved the United States and, as a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, he was had an even greater love for his family. He was especially proud of all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was also extremely proud of, and had a great admiration for his U.S. Coast Guard war-time shipmates, and for all of the employees of Plantation Pipeline Company, two groups of people he considered to be among the very best to be found anywhere. He always felt especially privileged to have known and served with every one of these special people. In addition to his parents, Walter was predeceased by his beloved grandmother, Dora Brandt, who provided him with a wonderful home when he needed it the most; his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of forty seven years, the mother of his four children, Edith Hooker Mackenzie; his dearly loved secound oldest dasyghter, Susan Marie Mackenzie; his brother Kenneth Randall Mackenzie and half-brother Douglas Reed Mackenzie. He is survived by his dearly loved second wife Norma Oliver Ragla Mackenzie, the treasure of the final twenty three years of his life; daughters and sons-in-law; Nancy Mackenzie Perryman of High Point NC; Janet Mackenzie Carner (Rick) of Acworth, GA; Deborah Ragla Necessary (Stephen) of Johns Creek, GA; by son Captain David Mackenzie, U.S. Coast Guard (Ret’d) and daughter in law Linda of Bainbridge Island, WA; as well as by ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. The Funeral Service, with the Reverend Doctor David Hardy of Living Grace Lutheran Church officiating, will be held at Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mt. Vernon Highway NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328 at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 19, 2014. Burial at Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs, GA, will follow the service. The family will receive visitors at Sandy Springs Chapel prior to the service from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19, 2014.
