Eusebio Gutierrez rests peacefully as the Good Lord called him on December 16, 2020. Born on January 19, 1937 in Zacatecas, Mexico, he was known to his family and close friends as Chevo, a man who at 19 years of age followed his father to the United States during the time of the Farm Labor Agreement - the “Bracero” program. Chevo lived in Santa Paula and worked for the Ventura Lemon Association packing house until he entered into a partnership with his Tio Jose to open Mario’s Fine Mexican Food restaurant in Oxnard. As co-owner he spent the next 20 years as head chef, overseeing the kitchen.
Chevo worked toward and accomplished his lifelong dreams over his many fruitful years; he married the love of his life, bought a house, had children, and purchased a brand new Cadillac. In 1961, he married Damiana Gutierrez and marked the beginning of a beautiful 44-year marriage filled with laughter, devotion, and affection. In 1963, his first son, Jorge, was born, followed by his daughter, Sylvia, in 1964 and son, David, in 1966. Chevo always encouraged his children to do well in school and to think about what they wanted to be when they grew up. He taught them right from wrong and fostered a relationship with Christ by taking his family to church every Saturday night. Chevo was a man of great faith, wisdom, responsibility, honor, and limitless generosity who held strong principles and common sense. He was a man of very few words, but had eyes that spoke volumes.
He retired early and had the good fortune to partake in the upbringing of his three granddaughters, whom he adored deeply and remained extremely proud of through the rest of his years. The unconditional love and support Eusebio showed his granddaughters never wavered, neither in being present for sports games or making sure they got to school on time and with their homework completed. To those three girls, their Grampa was their hero.
Eusebio will be deeply missed, but he leaves us with many fond memories.
He was preceded in death by his wife Damiana (Mora) Gutierrez, parents Maurilio & Juana Gutierrez and Tio Jose Gutierrez.
He leaves his children, Jorge Gutierrez, Sylvia (Martin) Martinez, David Gutierrez; granddaughters, Liliana, Sara, and Natasha Martinez; and siblings Maria Cuevas, Angel Gutierrez, Socorro Marquez, Danny Gutierrez, and Mario Gutierrez, and many more cherished family members and friends.
A special thank you to Patty Lopez for her exceptional care and dedication as Eusebio’s primary caregiver over the last seven years and to Magdalena Diaz and Dora Hernandez for their extraordinary care and kindness they showed Eusebio in his final years.
