

Claus Albert Wertheim (Al), age 98, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away on July 18, 2025. Al was born in Berlin, Germany to Erich Wertheim and Ann (Anna) Wertheim (nee Zimmt) on June 22, 1927. The family emigrated to the United States in 1940 and lived in New Jersey not far from Manhattan. Al graduated from South Side High School, Newark, and received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and an Art and a Master of Science degree majoring in Management Engineering from Newark College of Engineering. He married Ursula Jonas with whom he had two children, Eleanor and Eric. Al had a career in management engineering as the general manager of the Paterson Shade Company and later worked at Elco Industries. On retirement, Al and Ursula moved to Sarasota, Florida. Al was an enthusiast of classical music, theatre, and travelling, having explored the United States and many areas internationally for business, visiting family and friends and experiencing the world. Al was a serious stamp collector, accumulated a large collection of African and Asia Pacific masks and artifacts, and enjoyed tennis and swimming. On retiring Al volunteered with a range of organisations, such as the MOTE Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, served as a Long-Term Care Ombudsman for the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, and was active in the Lifelong Learning Academy and Sarasota Philatelic Club. He is survived by his daughter, Eleanor, and her partner Bill; his niece, Jean, and her husband Harold; his daughter-in-law, Karen; his grandson, Alexander, and great grandson Rowan; and his granddaughter, Taylor, and her husband Juno and great granddaughters, Nara and Nari.
