Edward Lazarus Kalin died in the early morning hours on June 9, 2022. Enjoying remarkably good health for 101 years of age, he succumbed to a brief illness that resulted in no pain and left his mind completely clear until the very end. His family had the pleasure to be able to engage in conversation with him, reminisce and say their goodbyes only hours before his death.
Ed was born in Perry Florida, March 12, 1921, to parents Ray Michalove and Samuel Kalin. He was raised in Hendersonville, North Carolina which he always considered his hometown. After graduating high school in 1938, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a member of TEP fraternity. He graduated with a BS in accounting and marketing in 1941.
These credentials afforded him a special opportunity to serve his country in WW2, which he felt was one of the most "exciting and rewarding periods" of his life. He attended Naval Supply School in Cambridge, MA (Harvard) and was subsequently stationed at Parris Island in Beaufort, SC. as Paymaster.
He ultimately served in a similar role on the island of Cavite in the Philippines until the end of the war. He was discharged with the final rank of Lieutenant SG.
After returning to the US, Ed partnered with cousins Maurice and Thelma Rothman to found Kanes Furniture in Saint Petersburg, Florida in 1948.
After a brief courtship, Ed married Alyce Weiss and together they founded Kanes Furniture of Sarasota in 1950. Kanes flourished in the boom days of business development in Sarasota, occupying 3 different storefronts between 1950 and 2016. Kanes provided multiple employment opportunities for over six decades.
Beginning in the 1960s, Ed became active in real estate development locally and internationally, eventually encompassing over one hundred individual property investments. Ed remained active in real estate until the day he died.
Ed was described by one of his closest friends as having an easy gentleman like manner, a bit of Southern charm & a sincere curiosity about people. He was an optimistic, reliable, consistent, loyal, generous, and patriotic man with style and charisma. He was a role model and mentor to many. His most enduring hobby was investing in real estate. As part of this passion, he enjoyed meeting, interacting with, and learning from people. Many of his close friendships started this way. To quote Ed; "It doesn't cost anything to be nice and it pays dividends".
Ed and his wife Alyce were socially conscious patrons of the arts, providing philanthropic support to organizations not only in Sarasota but nationally and internationally as well. Among these are Sarasota Manatee Jewish Federation, Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, Embracing Our Differences, Ringling College of Art and Design, and Temple Beth Sholom.
Edward is predeceased by his parents Samuel and Ray, his wife of 56 years, Alyce, and his brother Sidney. He is survived by his brother, Barry S. (Lois), his son Jeffrey (Suzy), his daughter Leslie Malkin (Marc Cohen), his grandchildren Evan Danzig (Carly), Nathan & Rachael Kalin, and his great granddaughter Dakota Danzig.
A private family graveside service was held. A celebration of life event will be scheduled at a future date.
