Erwin Jay Horwitz, 90, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 30, surrounded by his loving family. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 69 years, Sheila, a cherished father, and a proud grandfather whose wisdom and humor touched all who knew him.
Born on September 11, 1934, to Louis and Betty Horwitz, Erwin grew up in Albany, New York, where his family lived above their small grocery store. In high school, he played forward on the varsity basketball team, and it was during one particularly close game that he noticed a beautiful cheerleader from the opposing school—Sheila Stanger—the young woman who would become the love of his life.
With the encouragement of his late sister-in-law, Myra Horwitz, Erwin pursued higher education, becoming the first in his family to attend college. He went on to earn a master’s degree in business from the State University of New York at Albany. He also proudly served his country during the Korean conflict, both on active duty in the U.S. Army and later in the Reserves.
Erwin began his career teaching business at Medina High School before transitioning into finance, joining Hayden Stone, which later became Shearson Lehman Brothers. In 1968, his career took him to Miami to manage the brokerage office, and in 1972, he and his family relocated to Chappaqua, New York, where he continued his work as a financial advisor. Erwin consistently enjoyed President's Council status, which includes the top 10% of the Firm's producers. One of the highlights of his career was lecturing on the stock market to passengers aboard the QE2.
Together, Erwin and Sheila raised two sons, Michael and Roger. He taught them how to fish for tarpon and how to tie a Windsor knot with the perfect dimple. More importantly, he taught them that being a good father meant showing up for life’s little moments as well as the big ones—and that being a good husband could be summed up in two simple words: “Yes, honey.”
Erwin and Sheila shared a joyful life together—often wearing matching golf shirts, usually in neon colors. The two of them loved watching sports on TV, especially Steph Curry and the Warriors. A passionate golfer at the Meadows Country Club, Erwin looked forward to “beating his age,” something he began doing regularly once he turned 80. Known as “Mr. 8 Iron,” a title proudly displayed on the license plate of his beloved Lexus, he loved a good bump-and-run shot around the green, and the friendly competition of the game, especially when money was on the line.
Erwin loved to gamble, particularly excelling at craps, and took great pride in being comped at hotels in Las Vegas. Sundays were reserved for the New York Times Crossword Puzzle—always in pen—and the Spelling Bee, where he regularly reached “Genius” status. He never missed a Wordle and delighted in sharing his daily score with his family.
Erwin was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Sanford Horwitz of Bedford Hills, NY. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Sheila; his children, Michael Horwitz and his wife Kasey Kaufman of Chestnut Hill, MA, and Roger Horwitz and his wife Sandra of Menlo Park, CA; and his grandchildren, Alexa, Jackson, Lisanne, and Zack, who brought him endless pride and joy. He is also survived by his brother Howard of The Villages, FL.
At the heart of Erwin's life was his beloved Sheila. She was his Angel. From the moment they met as teenagers, theirs was a love marked by devotion, loyalty, and a shared joy in life's simple pleasures. He often said everything was better with Sheila at his side, and she returned that devotion with a grace and warmth that defined their 69 years together. Theirs was a bond that endured life's challenges, celebrated its triumphs, and stood as a beautiful testament to a life well-loved and well-lived.
Erwin’s warmth, humor, and love of life will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Erwin’s honor on Saturday, September 13, from 9:00 to 10:30 AM in the Community Room of Amira Choice, 4100 University Parkway, Sarasota, Fl 34243. All who wish to remember him are warmly invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity in Erwin's honor.
