Born May 22, 1943, in Huntington, West Virginia, to Lowal Ogden Adkins and Pauline Hall, Gaynel was one of two children. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her two sons, James Gregory Dickerson and David Warren Dickerson.
She is survived by her brother, Lowell “Herb” Adkins and wife Connie; loving grandchildren, Olivia Prince (Dickerson) and husband Austin, James D. Dickerson, Crystal O’Guin (Dickerson), Mickala M. Waites (Dickerson) and Tyler J. Dickerson; and nephew, Christopher Adkins and wife Sue. She also leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Camden and Cole, who will forever cherish her memory.
Throughout her life, Gaynel worked hard and cared deeply for others. She dedicated 30 years of her life to serving her community with courage and compassion as a proud member of the Sarasota Fire Department, formerly South Trail FD. Her strength, integrity, and selflessness touched countless lives, leaving behind a legacy of service and love.
Gaynel was a woman of simple joys. Her famous chocolate fudge and spicy rigatoni became family treasures, passed down through generations. She had a gift for gardening and could make anything grow, from flowers to vegetables. Her yard was always filled with vibrant blooms, and in her later years, she found peace watching birds and squirrels from her window.
A woman of faith, Gaynel lived her life with grace, humility, and strength. She taught by example—firm yet kind, practical yet loving—and her wisdom continues to guide those she left behind. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Sunnyside Village, all of the compassionate nurses at Tidewell Hospice, and her beloved chaplains, for their love and care.
Services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 21, 2025, at Robert Toale & Sons at Palms Memorial Park, with Rev. Elizabeth Turk officiating. Burial will be made at Palms Memorial Park in Sarasota County. The family will welcome friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
