Helen Akin Wilson, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, “Aunt Hub”, passed away September 1, 2021.
Helen Wilson was born November 5, 1927 in Evansville, Indiana. She lived the last several years in Sarasota, Florida, and prior to that, West Palm Beach, Florida. Her parents were Lorraine Mae Fischer and Newland Depauw Akin.
Helen graduated High School from Reitz High School in Evansville. She was a member of the Eastern Stars and the Fraternal Order of Elks in West Palm Beach.
Helen was married to Paul Reed Wilson (deceased) of Cynthiana, Indiana. They had two children, Pamela Wilson Revels of Sarasota, FL, and Steven Paul Wilson (deceased); and one stepdaughter, Bonnie Steckler, of Evansville, IN. Helen is also survived by grandsons Todd (Janet) Steckler, Trent (Tammy) Steckler, Troy (Lisa) Steckler, and Tyler (Alison) Steckler; and four great-grandchildren, Savannah Steckler, Sydney Steckler, Ethan Steckler, and Sean Steckler. She is preceded in death by her siblings, William Akin, Newland Akin Jr, Joseph Carl Akin, Mildred Akin Birdsong, and Carolyn Akin Black Schenk.
After graduating from high school, Helen worked as a bookkeeper and secretary. She volunteered at the USO during World War II. She loved to dance all her life, and her hobbies include ceramics, Bingo, bowling, sewing, and walking. She was a fabulous baker and cook; and was known for her gingerbread cookies, which were Holiday Traditions.
Consistently with a smile on her face, Helen hardly ever complained, and loved being with people, and was always kind and caring. She loved nature and the world around her, watching birds, ducks, and other animals, as well as appreciating the beauty of flowers, trees, the oceans, and the clouds in the sky.
Memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of Sarasota, FL and the American Cancer Society.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 pm, Sunday, September 12 at Robert Toale & Sons Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave, Sarasota, FL 34232; www.PalmsMemorial.com. A reception will follow the service from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the funeral home. A Burial will be held later in West Palm Beach/Lake Worth, Florida.
