

Howard E. Long, age 92 of Sarasota, passed away Monday, July 4, 2016. He was born September 20, 1923 in Amherst, NH to Edward and Dorothy Long. Howard proudly served his country in the 3rd Division, 3rd Battalion United States Marine Corps during WWII. He served in the Pacific Campaign on the Island of Guadalcanal and was wounded in action in Bougainville, for which he was awarded a Purple Heart. Howard was a member of the Florida Highway Patrol Auxiliary, a Co-Founder of the Sarasota DAV and was a member of the Marine Corps 3rd Division Association. A perfect day for Howard would include fast boats, fast cars and spending time with his family. Howard will be joining his former wife and mother of his children, Barbara Long; his twin brother, Harold; his brothers, Frank and Claire; and his sisters, Helen, Shirley, Muriel, and Pauline. He is survived by his son, Paul (Diane) Owen, grandsons, Rick (Melody) Hall and Joe (Terri) Owen, and great grandchildren, Tara, Hannah, and Rebecca; son, Leonard (Anneke) Long, granddaughter, Annaka Carter and great granddaughter, Scarlette Zimbaldi; son, Frank (Vicky) Long and grandchildren, Matt and Nicole Eischens; daughters, Patricia Long, Marilyn Chamberlain, Deborah and Donna Long; sister, Janice Brown; and current spouse, Katherine Long of NH. A funeral service for Howard will be on Sunday, July 10, 2016 at 3 PM at Palms Robarts Funeral Home. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1 – 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Neuro Challenge Foundation for Parkinson’s; 5602 Marquesas Circle #211 in Sarasota.
