

She was born in Erie, PA on July 28, 1923, the daughter of the late William H. Motsch and Irene Margaret (Kirschner) Motsch, and was also predeceased by her sister, Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Motsch Amann and brother, William R. Motsch. Joan was a graduate of St. Mary’s Grade School and Villa Maria Academy, Class of 1941.
She was married for 51 years to the late Early J. Garrett, also from Erie, living in Fairview Heights, IL. Joan and Early had two daughters, Patricia J. Fogertey of Lakewood Ranch, FL and the late Peggy Ann Garrett. Joan and Early resided in Fairview Heights for 50 years, Early working at Pabst (formerly Carling/Stag) Brewery in Belleville. Also surviving are Patricia’s daughters, Katherine I. Fogertey and Margaret G. Karger and Peggy’s son, Myles P. Kykta and daughter, Shannen E. Stewart. Joan is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and sister-in law Betty L. Motsch.
Joan was a member of St. Albert the Great Catholic Church for over 50 years and the Belleville Women’s Club, serving as secretary and treasurer. Active in the L.I.F.T Grief Recovery & Loss Group, she was an accomplished mall walker, walking an average of 4 days/week for over 40 years at St. Clair Square and recognized by the Belleville News Democrat. She also volunteered for Project Linus, knitting over 100 baby blankets and hats for NICU infants at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Joan retired from Famous Barr Inc. (Macy’s) where she worked in the Vault.
Internment will be next to her husband at Lake View Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Fairview Heights, IL. Family would like to thank the Pines of Sarasota-Hammocks for the tender loving care she received during the last year of her life.
