John was raised in Dubuque, Iowa, son of the late Gen and Pete Carney. He graduated from Loras Academy in Dubuque, Iowa, and the University of Iowa. John served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
Prior to his retirement from Hussmann Refrigeration, he managed Branches in Detroit, Michigan and Minneapolis, Minnesota. The family lived in West Bloomfield, Michigan for 25 years, then Edina, Minnesota for eight years, prior to moving to Sarasota in 1985.
John was a Catholic, and member of Incarnation Church in Sarasota.
John is survived by his wife Mary (who was raised in Oelwein, Iowa), sons Michael, (Linda), Milwaukee, Wis., Patrick, of Lenexa, Kansas, Tim (Jennifer), Aspen, Colorado, daughter Susan (John), Long Grove, Il, and a brother Tom (Andrea) San Diego, California. John had four Grandchildren.
A private Mass for immediate family members is pending, and will be held at Incarnation Church in Sarasota. Burial will be in Oelwein, Iowa.
