John attended St. Rita High School and graduated from Northern Illinois University with a degree in business. He proudly served in the U.S. Army as a medic.
He was the beloved husband of Candace (Zawaski) McMahon for 55 years. John spent his entire career with United Parcel Service, beginning as a package car driver and rising to Vice President of Human Resources.
John could often be found on the golf course. He enjoyed traveling, a good bottle of wine or scotch, and cheering on his Chicago sports teams—especially the White Sox and Bears. Above all, he cherished time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Candace; his daughter, Galen (McMahon) Wagnaar, and her husband, Matt Wagnaar; and his grandchildren, Danny and Natalie Wagnaar. He is also survived by his brother, Terry McMahon, and his wife, Mary Margaret (Downs) McMahon; his sister, Mary Kay (McMahon) Wojcik, and her husband, Tom Wojcik; as well as more than 20 nieces and nephews, their spouses, and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John Fisher Church, 10235 S. Fairfield Avenue, Chicago, IL at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 1.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
