John Spittal, of Sarasota, Florida, a man whose kindness, humor, and unwavering compassion touched countless lives, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2025.
Born to Mardell Anna Spittal and John Malcolm Spittal, John grew up with a strong sense of service and community. He attended Augustana College and later earned his MBA. John's faith was the foundation of his life, leading him to serve as a Lutheran Pastor at St. Mark's in Fairfield, CT. His heart for others extended beyond the pulpit. Through his work with the Cambodian Refugee Program and Lutheran Children and Family Services, he helped Hmong families find homes, jobs, and a new beginning in the United States.
John's career spanned both ministry and healthcare administration. He was an administrator at a kidney dialysis center in Philadelphia and later served as CEO of Village on the Isle in Venice, Florida, where he continued to advocate for care and community for the elderly.
When John wasn’t working, he lived life to the fullest. He loved fishing, golfing, traveling, and especially cruising and antiquing with his beloved late wife, Joan. A loyal fan of live music, John was happiest swaying to the sounds of the Grateful Dead, and could often be seen wearing his favorite Snoopy tee-shirts.
He is survived by his children, John Eric Spittal (Jackie), David Karl Spittal (Lisa), and Eric Steven Spittal (Kim); his stepchildren, James William Maiden and Illene Heather Dyrda (Skip); and his cherished grandchildren, Julia, Johanna, Amelia, Anders, and Mackenzie. John lived with an open heart, a quick smile, and a steady faith. His spirit will live on in the many lives he touched.
A service celebrating John's life will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 7750 S. Beneva Rd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Faith Lutheran Church or to Hope Springs Farm 201 Trail Rd, Hershey, PA 17033; a day program for children with disabilities.
