
Leonard R. Chartier, a resident of Sarasota, FL died Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at the TideWell Hospice House in Sarasota, FL. He was the husband of Theresa A. (Bertrand) Chartier with whom they had celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Born in Nashua, NH, May 11, 1932, he was the son of the late Raymond and Idella (Kristofer) Chartier. He attended schools in Dunstable and Lowell, MS.
In September, 1950, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the U.S.S. Beatty DD 756 and the USS Keppler DD 765. He was discharged July of 1954 and was awarded the “Good Conduct Medal”, “National Defense Medal”, “Korean Service Medal W/2 Engagement Stars”, “UN Service Medal”, “China Service Medal”, and the “Navy Occupation Service Medal W/ European Clasp”. Leonard was a Third Class Petty Office.
Mr. Chartier worked as a union carpenter/ superintendent for 32 years before retiring in 1992.
He lived in West Townsend, MA for 36 years and was a communicant and an active member at St. John’s Parish.
Leonard was a life time member and Past Commander of VFW Post 6538, a member of the American Legion Post 199, a past president and secretary of the Townsend Lions Club, and a member of UBC of America local 107.
Besides his wife, the former Theresa A. (Bertrand) Chartier, he is survived by two daughters, Valerie M. Mahoney and Holly A. Dana; two sons, Keith A. Chartier and Brian M. Chartier; 8 grandchildren, Mark and Craig Cochran, Amber and Kathrine Chartier, Kevin Chartier, Melissa Danna, Ryan Chartier and Robert Mahoney III. Leonard was preceded in death by his grandson, Daniel Chartier. He also leaves behind 22 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Incarnation Catholic Church, 2901 Bee Ridge Rd., Sarasota, FL 34239.
