Maria was a devoted mother, grandmother, and community member. She attended school through the third grade and went on to dedicate her life as a housewife and seamstress. In 2004, she was honored as “Mother of the Year” by her hometown community in Ecuador, a testament to her loving and generous spirit.
She was married to Vicente Alcivar for 35 years before their divorce in 1994. Maria found deep joy in her faith and was a longtime parishioner of St. Jude Catholic Church in Sarasota. She was known for handcrafting 100 rosaries a week, which she shared with her church and gave freely to taxi drivers during visits to Ecuador, offering prayers for their protection through God and the Virgin Mary.
Maria had a passion for embroidery and made sure each family member received a special piece from her—either hand-embroidered pillowcases or serving cloth. Her laughter was contagious, and she found true happiness in making others smile. Generosity defined her; always giving money to friends and family, especially those in need.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved son, Ider Alcivar; granddaughter, Chelsie Alcivar; great-grandson, Joaquin Alvia; and siblings Hector, Guillermo, Gonzalo, Ofilia, and Egnita Mero.
She leaves behind her loving children, Pia Alvia (Humberto Alvia) and Ray Alcivar; grandchildren Allen (Jessica), Sasha, and Natalie Alvia, and Cyndel, Ashley, Tanya, and Monserrate Alcivar. She is also survived by her cherished older brother, Luis Mero, who is 100 years old.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at 1:00 PM at St. Jude Catholic Church, 3930 17th St, Sarasota, FL 34235. Burial will follow at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave, Sarasota, FL 34232.
Maria’s love, laughter, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
