Mrs. Young….

I told my daughter about you today. And how you changed my life as a young child. How 35 years later, you are still the only person who saw my light and nourished it by giving my writing, and me, the love I didn’t get at home.

To her family, I only wish I could have told her this while she was here.

Thank you for allowing us to participate in Mrs. Young's lovely memorial service virtually and we can tell how loved your wife, mom and grandma was. It is funny to think we have only met Mrs. Young a few times over the years because her warmth and goodness have made such a lasting impression. She is a wonderful example to all of us to shine a light through our actions and kind words and to find and share the joy that life presents to us. Like so many others, we feel blessed to have known Mrs. Young.

May Mrs. Young's memory be eternal and we know her bright light will continue to shine. Keep the happy memories close.

Mary Young was a special purse. She was a mother-in-law to me as well as a confident and someone I could just share with. She was quite the adventurous. I remember taking her for a motorcycle ride on the back of my motorcycle going a few miles to curvy windy roads in the lake and she had a wall and all this when she was probably, she was 67 in that neighborhood. She has become a constant in my hockey season routines we would text during and after each Rangers game last year and all the playoff games as well became quite the hockey knowledge and she enjoyed as she would say watching them do hockey skating day. Maybe you know what type was like she was talking about it up in Bemus  Mary will be missed, but she will remain forever in my thoughts and in my heart .

Normally I am not short on words but this loss is difficult for our family in Connecticut to process. We will forever be greatful for the Young’s friendship & love for our Aunt Flo & for Donna & I; Mary will live in our hearts forever.

How do I begin to recall the 20 + years I spent with my bright and happy friend. I was blessed to have known Mary Young. Mary was always busy helping others, which was her goal for the day. I loved all those great coffee talks we shared.  She always had something for  me, be it healthy food, plants, a rug, or my art bag which I still use every week! 
Mary’s love of music was very present in her life. She and my husband Bill would talk for hours. We enjoyed going to classical music concerts together. As time passed, we saw each other less. But when we were together, it was like no time had passed. Because once you knew Mary you were a forever friend. I never had a sister, but if I could have chosen one, it would have been Mary 
Her love for her family and her dogs, were a constant in her life. How do we live with such a gigantic loss? For me, I will try to be what Mary would expect of me, be kind, be helpful, don’t overreact, and just smile at all you see. Goodness was who Mary was to us all! She’s in my daily forever memories.

Sorry to hear of Mary's death.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

My mom made small things fun: finding treasures in yard sales, pulling weeds, walking dogs, and simple conversations. Decorating for holidays to make the house special, and sending me home with a decoration for mine.

She taught our family through her words and actions that helping others brings joy to oneself. For Mom, people always came before places and things. 

She took care of her infant granddaughter when I went back to work part-time,  saying, “My mom did it for me and I will do it for you.” She always loved her granddaughter, even when that granddaughter was a little whipper-snapper at times. Morgan remembers picnics under orchid trees in the neighborhood, being a “tree doctor,” the magic of light shining through trees, pulling Spanish moss off crepe myrtles on neighborhood walks, growing tiny vegetables because Morgan loved tiny things.

Mom never liked to be the center of attention, though she knew and was loved by so many neighbors that one called her the “the neighborhood glue.” 

When I got stressed with lesson planning and other tiring teacher tasks, mom said, “Just make sure the kids have fun. Learning should be fun.” She was a teacher who cared deeply for her kids and, as in the rest of her life, those relationships were more important than any other aspect of the job. 

My mom was wise and loving and the person I could count on for unconditional love. At points in my life when I’ve been low, I would lay on the bed next to mom and her very presence was comforting. She would always tell me, “This too will pass.” She told me many times and especially in the last few years that she was grateful for me. I just hope she realized how very grateful I was to be loved by her.

I feel incredibly blessed to have had such a beautiful soul as a mother. She’s always been there for my sister and me, giving unconditional love, kindness, compassion, and support. 

Some of my favorite memories are childhood family vacations; picking fruits and veggies as a child and later as an adult, road trips with Mom (especially the ones to visit my sister Lisa in Charleston); our trip to a Deepak workshop in NYC and visiting the Imagine garden; making and decorating cookies; Mom’s daily text messages; the franken-cake she, Mike, and I made; Mom cheering on the NY Rangers just because Mike and I are fans; and simply hanging out with her, which was one of her favorite things to do. I appreciate the way she valued time with us over anything else. 

When Lisa and I were young adults living in the DC area, we met our parents at a Neil Diamond concert. We were intently listening to him sing when Mom said, “I wish he would shut up so I could visit with you girls!”

Because we’ve lived in different states for the last few decades, Mom would always tell me that she carries me in her heart. That has meant more to me than words can express... feeling her pure, unconditional love even when we couldn’t be together physically.

I have always appreciated you for your total love and dedication to our lives together - over the almost 63 years of marriage, including our travels together throughout the world. You are an angel to me, our children, Lisa and Chris, and granddaughter Morgan, and everyone you meet. You had an adoring spirit and light toward everyone you met, including your dearest friends. 

I thank you for your total inspirational love, which will remain with me for the rest of my life. Thank you for telling me in your labored breath toward the end that you love me.

I wrote something heart-felt, hoping to comfort Jim, Lisa, Chris, and Morgan. I submitted over and over again: "Try again." My message disappeared.
I will reconstruct.
For now, please know that my thoughts are with you. Mary was one-of-a-kind.
