Melvin A. Smith, 84, of Bradenton, Florida, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2026. Born on June 20, 1941, in Atlanta, Georgia, Melvin lived a full and meaningful life defined by devotion to his family, his work, and his faith.
He dedicated 42 years of his career to the insurance industry with USF&G, where he was known for his strong work ethic and commitment. Melvin also proudly served his country in the United States Air Force Reserves for six years during the Cuban Missile Crisis, reflecting his sense of duty and quiet strength. Later in life, while watching military jets practice their maneuvers over the Gulf of America from his favorite spot on the deck in Destin, Florida, he would teach the children with a smile, “THAT is the sound of VICTORY!”
Melvin is survived by his beloved wife, Gail Smith; his brother, Don Smith; and his children: Julie Smith Carter; Scott Smith and his wife, Jillian; Tricia Howard and her husband, Timothy; and Todd Pater and his wife, Lorraine. He was a proud grandfather to Kaison, Elodie, Ryder, Alexis, Connor, Blake, Brooke, and Ashley, and a loving great-grandfather to Isla and Ari, all of whom brought him immense joy.
He will be remembered as a kind, loving, and spiritual husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend. With his quick wit and easy humor, Melvin had a remarkable ability to bring laughter to any
room, whether he was joking with his great-grandchildren or sharing stories with lifelong friends. He was also an avid University of Georgia Bulldogs fan, and his family will forever smile knowing his urn is engraved with two of his favorite words, “GO DAWGS.”
His steady presence, gentle spirit, and unwavering love for his family touched all who knew him. He took great pride in his family and found his greatest joy in the time spent together.
His legacy of love, faith, and quiet strength will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 6, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Robert Toale & Sons Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park, 170 Honore Ave Sarasota, Florida 34232
