

Sigmund Walder, age 93, passed peacefully on January 12, 2015. Sigmund was born March 27, 1921, in Berlin, Germany. He relocated to West Hartford, CT, with his wife in 1948, and settled in Sarasota, FL, in 1998. Sigmund was a loving and devoted husband to Jenny Walder, who survives him, for 67 years; and, father to Robert Walder, who passed in 2010. Sigmund is also survived by his grandchildren, Sara and Jason, and Jason's wife, Alison. Sigmund was a holocaust survivor who was captured in Vichy, France, in 1942, and spent more than three years as a prisoner in several camps, including Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and Dachau. Sigmund reunited with his family in Brussels, Belgium, in 1945, after a harrowing escape during the liberation, and met Jenny shortly thereafter. They married in 1947. Between 1945 and 1947, Sigmund was involved in numerous business ventures and received an advanced education in jewelry design and manufacturing, which was his family trade. After moving to the United States, Sigmund owned and operated a very successful jewelry atelier in Hartford, CT, for more than 45 years. In his retirement, Sigmund stayed actively engaged in community boards, and enjoyed spending time on one of his passions: investment research, and trading. Sigmund will be remembered for his incredible intelligence, wit, generosity, and perseverance, by friends and family alike. Sigmund's legacy will live on.
