I just learned of Steve’s passing almost a year ago.  I offer my deepest belated condolences to his wife, daughter, and the entire Sarasota fishing community.
I met Gibby many years ago in a place we both loved, kayak fishing on Buttonwood Bay.  We ran into each other fishing there so often that we started fishing together on a fairly regular basis.  Just two old guys, (I am two years older) in plastic boats enjoying nature and catching some fish.  Although I was a pretty experienced kayak fisherman when we met, Gibby was always the master and I was the student. I learned something new every time I went fishing with Steve and he always out fished me.  I have many fond memories of our times together including a couple of trips to Ft Desoto so I could take pictures of him catching sharks.
RIP Gibby.  You are greatly missed by all that knew you.


We moved to st Pete in 2018

I’m an avid fly fisher and I met gibby at Suncoast Flyfishers.  But before that I used his DT variation and will always do so.  He was an innovator and an amazing dude.  Always answering my emails with such pleasure for our sport.  We lost a great man.  Thanks for your service gibby and Godspeed.  Here a pic of a triple tail on a gibby DT variation.  Our fly club is for ever grateful and so is any snook Flyfisher. 

Glad I shot this short video of Gibby fighting a feisty beach snook on fly. We took a lot of pictures together but not much on video although Steve did with his Go Pro camera and did some neat videos with it that he posted online. 

Hope you’re fly fishing somewhere over the rainbow 🌈 my friend! Thanks for the great memories and advice on life over the years! I’ll try and keep my loops tight and my rod tip down 👍🏻👊🏻. I remember your Fishing Hotline message when you were at the Herald Tribune as Gibby’s Tip of the Week! 
It’s designed to improve your angling, increase your catch and more importantly, put a bend in that fishing rod! You definitely did that my friend and to many that you never met! RIP Gibby! 


Dear Kathy, very sorry to read about Steve. Had so many conversations with him about sharks and fishing when he was our outdoors writer. He helped us educate people in immeasurable ways. Allie & I’ve donated to Nate’s Honor, where we adopted our dog last December, in Steve’s memory.  Take care - Bob

Gibby was one the good ones. I was fortunate to have him as a workmate/mentor while learning the skills of sports writing at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune from 1976-1983. Gibby was patient and encouraging as I learned about sports and editing, Though he loved the outdoors, he took on any sports assignment with gusto (think high school football).

Gibby, I'm so sorry you had to go so soon, but I'll bet there's not an empty fish pond where you are now. Love you and thank you for your kindness over the years.

Steve introduced me to kayak and fly fishing we went on many trips from the everglades to the Suwannee River.
I always said they were more than fishing trips they were adventures of a lifetime with one  the best fishermen Sarasota had. My fishing memories with will be etched in me forever.

I am heartbroken to hear this news. Steve had guided me for probably twenty years. We had many adventures - paddling kayaks through droves of alligators on the Mayaka River, padding nightime dock light fishing, pursuing exotics in the Everglades. Steve was a great teacher, and relentless in his pursuit of fish. He has touched the lives of many fly fishers.

I have known Steve since he got to Sarasota. Whether we fished fresh or saltwater, we always had a great time. I’ve got to admit that the stories that he wrote always made me look like a real good fisherman, he will be missed by many that he taught over the years.

I remember always talking to uncle steve about fishing and I will always remember him taking us out fishing down in Sarasota when we would come down and we ended up watching some manatees playing around the boat before always catching some pompano and the way he cooked them will always taste the best for a salty fish you would have never guessed it wasn't from Florida l. He always treated me like family and he was a very kind caring soul rest in peace uncle Steve hope your catching some fish up there🙂😔😔😔

Steve introduced me to Tarpon fishing in 1977 and that has been my passion since that day . We spent many , many beautiful hours on the waters making memories that i will always cherish. Thanks again Steve RIP

Dear Kathy,Morgan and the Family. Please accept our sincere condolences. May "Gibby" rest in peace, he was such a big part of my life back in the day when he was writing at the paper. Truly enjoyed many days of fishing with him back in our younger years.  Love to all.

Uncle Steve was such a great guy.  After our family vacation to Gatlinburg , TN he was known as ‘Uncle Dunkel’!  That was a great trip.  We love you ‘Auntie Chow-Chow’ and Morgan!
