

Bernie was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 9, 1934. After graduating from Chadsey High School in Michigan, Bernie enlisted in the United States Army. Following his service to our country, Bernie relocated to Boise, Idaho, where he received an associate degree in Business Finance from Boise Junior College. Bernie began his career in banking at the Baltimore Savings and Loan. Eventually Bernie returned to Boise, Idaho, and served as Vice President for United First Federal for over 25 years. From banking, Bernie went into politics serving as an Idaho State Representative for two terms and Idaho State Senator for 2 years. Bernie finished his professional career as a 27 year federally appointed Bankruptcy Trustee in the State of Idaho.
Bernie enjoyed golf and gin rummy as an active member at Hillcrest Country Club and The Arid Club. He served on numerous charitable boards including the Idaho Botanical Gardens, Lions Club, and The Live Foundation where he provided decades of dedicated service and leadership. As a Detroit native, Bernie always had a passion for cars and attended hundreds of car shows and auctions including the Barrett Jackson Car Show in Scottsdale, Arizona. One of his fondest memories centered around spending time with family and friends at their home in McCall, Idaho. After retirement, Bernie and Pat traveled to China and Italy highlighted by his visit to the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City.
Bernie is survived by his wife Pat (Hessner) Rakozy, children Diane Hinkle Rakozy and Carol Rakozy Borror, son-in law Steven Borror, and half-sister Diane Dunn. He has four grandchildren; Kyle Hinkle, Cody Rakozy, Carter Borror and Gabrielle Borror-Sargent; three nephews; Rob Rakozy, Mike Rakozy, Chris Rakozy, and one niece Susan Rakozy Talentino. He was preceded in death by his father, John Francis Rakozy, and mother, Martha Skora, his only son Stephan John Rakozy, brother Robert John Rakozy, and sister Dorthy Rakozy.
A celebration of Bernie’s life will be held at St. John’s Cathedral in Boise, Idaho, on January 9, 2025, at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, his family kindly requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Idaho Botanical Garden.
