Born in rural Iowa, Fran grew up in Ralston and Omaha, Nebraska. She met George Arthur Chittenden, the eventual love of her life, while living in Ralston. Their two families were well acquainted as Fran’s father rented a large home from George’s grandfather when they first moved to NE and George’s father ended up working for Fran’s father a few years later. Fran and George played together as youngsters and danced together as preteenagers at the annual company parties. Fran wrote letters to George while he was in the Navy, but their romance did not begin until George returned from WWII. George and Fran became reacquainted when Fran asked George to a high school Sadie Hawkins Dance at the suggestion of Fran’s mother. Following that, they continued to date and dance together. They were married August 27, 1949 in Omaha. Fran was a stay at home mother raising a family of four children while living in Nebraska, Mississippi, Massachusetts, Maine, and Arizona. She started her work career working a comptometer for Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha prior to starting her family and returned to working after they were grown. Fran retired in 2002 as president of her own Insurance Brokerage firm in Phoenix, AZ. Fran had the gift of hospitality, was an avid dancer, and a member of several social/philanthropic organizations such as Soroptimists and Red Hat Society. She was an excellent seamstress and loved doing arts & crafts when not off on adventures with George around the world, exploring the USA in their large motorhome, or fishing in their boat.
Fran was predeceased by her brothers, Wesley Wayne Parker and Stanley Bruce Parker as well as her oldest son, George Alan Chittenden. Fran is survived by her husband of 68 years, George A. Chittenden of Scottsdale, AZ; her brother, Phillip Eugene Parker of Omaha, NE; her daughter, Linda L. (Glen) Huff of Virginia Beach, VA; her two sons, David P. (Vicki) Chittenden of Phoenix, AZ and Dale L. (Kathie) Chittenden of Tempe, AZ as well as eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Private family only funeral arrangements are under the direction of Green Acres Mortuary & Cemetery, Scottsdale, AZ.
