Mr. Coin thank you for giving us your best. You believed in us and gave us the tools to not only hope, but develop the strategies to make our dreams come true. I am honored to have know you. You will be missed. Class of 1986.

Mr. Coin has had such an impact on me as an educational equity professional. I will hold his mission to "develop an Army of Leaders who will Change the World" close to my heart as I continue this work. Thinking about his uplifting spirit and caring heart brings joy and comfort to my own heart as we mourn his passing. Thank you, Mr. Coin, for being a champion, guide, supporter, and light. We gladly continue the legacy of your work for the next generation of leaders. 

Irv was not only a colleague and mentor but a great friend. His passion and leadership within our WESTOP association was a large part of our success. He truly loved working with students and peers. You will be truly missed but know that your legacy will continue to impact hundreds of TRIO professionals. Your life impacted so many and may you Rest in Eternal Peace my friend.

Mr. Coin may not have been the tallest in the room, but when he entered, there was the presence of a giant who inspired quiet reverence. Mr. Coin leaves a legacy in TRiO, ASU, and beyond. I remember our conversations about the work and the "why" behind the work - he always kept that at the forefront and I'm grateful for those reminders. And of course I remember the coins and the chapstick he always carried! Mr. Coin, your smile made everyone feel at ease and that they had a home in the university. Thank you for your gentle ways and for building a firm foundation to house those who are changing the world. Rest in peace and power, Mr. Coin.

I will only have fond memories of you, especially dishing me some humble pie when I needed it the most in your office.  Thanks for the talks and laughs.  


His leadership and compassion for higher education at me on a path of reaching success. Thank you Mr. Coin for all you did for me while an Upward Bound student and beyond. You were a true gift that kept on giving. 

Rest in peace, Mr. Coin. As a class member of the ASU Upward Bound class of 2003, he was such a wise man and his talks were always so inspiring. Thank you for all your contributions. You will be missed. 

Mr.  Coin was an Amazing Human Being  and Mentor, his physical body may not be here anymore but part of his soul will live in so many of us (his students, family, and friends) forever.   He’ll be remembered for  generations to come, for so many  life's he has change. ❤️

Mr. Coin, I am so heartbroken to hear of your passing. I consider you one of most influential people in my life because of your mentorship. You allowed me to start Upward Bound as a high school freshman in 1976 and after graduating from high school, you hired me to be an UB tutor for 4 years. You really cared for your students. When I worked for you, you gave me a plaque with the saying, “Your dream is the promise of all you can become.” I have lived by that my entire life.  Your dedication to your students has changed the trajectory of our lives as well as the lives of our families for generations.  May you Rest In Peace knowing that your Upward Bounders will continue your

Irvin Coin you are and always will be one of the most important people in my life that influenced, inspired, motivated, and mentored my brother and I. Thanks to your leadership, friendship, and love we became educated professionals who hopefully have carried on some of your work. Irv was one of the highlights of attending a WESTOP conference.  He was always so cheerful, smiling and such a joy to be around.  He will be truly missed in the TRIO community.  My prayers and deepest condolences to his family.

Mr. Coin's words have carried me through my darkest times, and I owe everything to his encouragement and guidance. I became an educator because of him, and I have tried to live up to his example. 

He was a great man. I am so thankful to have had him in my life.  I will always think of him and his enthusiasm for education and belief in his students. 

I met Mr. Coin in 1982 when I transferred from the Central Arizona College Upward Bound Program to the ASU UB Program. Mr. Coin was my Upward Bound Director, counselor, employer, mentor and Sun Devil proxy-Dad. When I was hired by ASU to work with the Information Technology Department, Mr. Coin was the first person with whom I shared the good news. He congratulated me with a great big smile and  said "Believe in yourself, Esteban. I do!" I offer my condolences to the Coin family. Rest in eternal peace Mr. Coin.

Mr. Coin is one of the key individuals in my life and he will remain that for all eternity. His mentorship shaped who I am personally and professionally. I have no doubt that I am a better person because of his influence. I am proud to be a part of his professional legacy and am honored to witness the flight of his familal legacy.

I met this great man in early 90's during one of the COE's annual conferences in Washington, DC.  We have been friends ever since.  In the immortal words of Thomas Campbell, "To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die."  You are in our hearts, as always. Irv Coin was the first Upward Bound Director I met as I began my journey with NAU Upward Bound. He was always no nonsense about why we do the work we do, always with his big smile! Irv's legacy with ASU Upward Bound will continue with all of the many lives he has impacted, including mine. Irv set the standard for what it means to be committed to your work and students.  My prayers go out to the Coin family.

Thank you for your commitment and dedication  to the success of so many. Your guidance and shared experiences have been invaluable. Thank you for being an amazing colleague,  mentor, and leader.  Eternal rest, Irv.  

Lilia and I are heartbroken to hear of Irv’s passing. He was a dear friend and we have many memories of times we shared. I enjoyed my TRIO work with Irv. He was a real leader in WESTOP and mentored many colleagues and students. Prayers go out to his family and many friends. May the students he mentored and encouraged now continue his legacy.

Mr Coin inspired so many lives. He was always there, supporting the students and offering his help wisdom and advice. I will forever be grateful to him for encouraging me to go to college. It’s because of his guidance I graduated with a degree and it forever changed my life and my direction. Thank you to Mr. Coin for a life well lived and inspiring others to seek greatness.

Mr. Coin was one of those TRIO icons that I will always remember. His calm and peaceful way was something he shared with everyone. His wisdom helped anyone he came into contact with. He helped both veteran directors and TRIO staff push themselves harder to do all that we can for our students. 

I am sincerely sorry for your loss. He unselfishly helped so many. He will be missed.

So sorry to hear, Irv was a good friend, a great mentor and just a genuine and kind human being. An inspiration to many of us who had the fortune of spending quality time with him. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

Mr. Coin was an amazing person who changed lives.  Thank you for sharing him with us.  His wisdom and ripples will continue through those he taught and the world is a better place for it.  He will always be remembered fondly by our family.
