John “Hap” McGivern Jr., 54, of Scottsdale, passed away after battling cancer on August 12, 2016. John was born June 6, 1962 in Tempe, AZ to John Sr. “Jack” and Janice McGivern. He was always such a happy child that he quickly earned the nickname “Hap” which stuck with him the rest of his life. He was the kind of guy who was loved by all for his happy-go-lucky, good natured personality. Hap grew up in Scottsdale, attended Supai School and played in the marching band at Coronado High School. After high school, he lived briefly in Boulder, CO and then returned to AZ to study Graphic Design. In 1995, he married Debbie Lofboom and settled in Scottsdale. He worked for the Scottsdale School District as a landscaper at Coronado High for many years and then moved on to become a supervisor with AAA Landscape. Always the talented artist, he took great pride in his landscaping skills and enjoyed decorating his yard during holidays. Hap was proud to be an Arizona native, loved classic rock music (especially the Rolling Stones) and was a loyal Denver Broncos fan. Hap is survived by his wife, Debbie McGivern, son Dustin Szotek of Mesa, mother Janice McGivern of Scottsdale, sister Jill Myrick (Todd) of Tempe, half-sisters Kim Johnson and Jacci Colaneri of OH, aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews, cousins, countless lifelong friends and most of all, his beloved dog, Saydee. He was preceded in death by his father, John “Jack” McGivern and grandparents. Services will be held at Green Acres Mortuary, 401 N. Hayden Rd., Scottsdale, AZ on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 3 pm with a visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Hap’s name to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014. Rest in peace, Hap Happy Hapster Happers. You will be missed beyond words and be forever in our hearts.
