November 26, 1932 - July 12, 2024
Our Dearest and most Beautiful Mom, and adored wife of Gail, has gone to join him in Heaven! Barbara lost her battle with Alzheimer's on July 12th, at age 91, overlooking the Rose Garden at Hospice Care Center in Kirkland, peacefully, with family at her bedside, and with so much care and dignity given to her by this God-given staff.
Barbara was born in San Francisco on November 26th, 1932, to Charles and Mildred Gleaves. She walked across the Golden Gate Bridge, at 5 years old, hand in hand with her dad, on opening day May 27, 1937. Grandpa told her then, to always remember that day, and she did! Barbara always claimed her roots in San Francisco, even after the family, with her older sister Helen, moved to Seattle's Queen Anne Hill, for their Dad's work. Barbara was a proud graduate of Queen Anne High School, attending all reunions, even those at her elementary school, the historic John Hay. She embraced the wonderful value of life long friendships that was so dearly instilled into the lives of her children. Debbie recalls clearly, the presence of Lenora, Bev, Marlys, Marilyn, June, her cousin Lorraine, Bruce, and so many others.
Barbara met her life partner at a dance, where Gail was drumming with the on stage band. They married blissfully in 1953 and enjoyed 72 years together, along with daughter Debbie, and son Steve.
Mom was a fiercely loving family woman, but she highly valued her career in the Dentistry field. She used her Dental Assistant College degree, obtained in San Francisco, to ultimately manage for many years, a group practice of 8 dentists at Crown Hill Dental Center in Ballard. She kept this clinic not only running, but in getting the dentists paid!
Barbara was a long time member of the Children's Orthopedic Guild, organizing craft fundraisers for a cause dear to her heart. She served as a Deacon, with Gail at University Presbyterian Church, as well as with the Hospitality Committee, lovingly setting up refreshments for memorials at the Church.
Daughter-in-law Lisa, has shared personal visions of Barbara, so true to her beautiful life well lived. We will miss her positive shining light always, and honor her precious gift of giving us all, the wings to soar to the best we could be. Barbara LOVED: her home and family, the beach property and collection of her Kingston July 4th parade buttons, her sweet dachshunds Cleo and Heidi, Hawaii, gardening, travel to foreign countries, the casino, making fresh blackberry pies we all devoured, and of course, her lipstick, (a trait which Debbie has inherited!). We love you so much eternally Mom, and take solace that you are once again with Dad, in Heavenly Happiness.
Barbara leaves behind her loving daughter Debbie, dear son Steve (Lisa), sister Helen, grandsons Zae and Owen, great granddaughter Roe, extended family and friends, and grand fur babies, Bella, Junie, Josie and Hilda.
Services and a reception will be held at University Presbyterian Church: 4540 15th Ave NE Seattle, WA 98109, on August 12th, at 12pm Noon. Memorials in Barbara's name may be made to Evergreen Hospice of Kirkland, The Alzheimer's Foundation of Washington, or University Presbyterian Church. Thank you as ever to Rich, and to all the angels of Laurel Cove Assisted Living and Memory Care, who helped manage my Mom's comfort over many months. You are all so gratefully appreciated by mom and our family!
