Betty is survived by her sister, Georgene Lee; daughters, Kris, Jan and daughter-in-law Valerie; stepchildren, Tom, Nancy, Adam and their spouses; her beloved grandchildren Rebecca, Georgia, Shannon, Breanna, Kyle, Kristina, Alec, Madelyn, and Kameron; and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her second husband, Harry Pflaumer, first husband, George Mainz, and her brothers, Gordon and Robert Helling.
Betty met every challenge with tenacity and courage, and always found a way to succeed in spite of the roadblocks she faced. She placed a high value on education of all forms, initially pursuing an engineering degree at South Dakota School of Mines, and later transferring to South Dakota State University where she received a BS in teaching. Betty obtained a Master's Degree in Counseling from the University of Oregon, as well as administrative credentials at Portland State University.
Betty had a successful career in education spanning over 40 years. She worked her way from a young teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in South Dakota, to a middle and high school educator, guidance counselor, and school administrator in Longview, WA. Betty was ahead of her time, ensuring that every student had a place, no matter their circumstance.
In retirement, Betty traveled the world and was a deeply loving grandmother. As a mentor for her many beloved grandchildren, she continued to teach and share her knowledge. She was an avid gardener, creating a beautiful sanctuary at her home in Cambria, CA, which was featured in Sunset Magazine. Betty will be remembered for her humor, her big heart and her true grit.
A celebration of Betty's life will take place at Flintoft's Funeral Home on Sunday May 6, 2018 at 11am.
