

Doris Nesvig Ashleman was born in Chicago, IL, on Mother’s Day, May 12, 1918, and passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on January 7, 2017. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she is survived by her brother David (Jane) Nesvig of San Diego, CA, her five children: James (Elizabeth) Ashleman, Carol (Jeffery) Howard, Susan (Stephen) Whittier, Richard (Sheryl) Ashleman and Marilyn Buffer; ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren and many cousins. Doris moved to Seattle in 1922 from Chicago when her father, Rev. Martin L. Nesvig, and his wife, Clara (Holland), accepted a call to serve as pastor of First Norwegian Lutheran Church (now Denny Park Lutheran). She graduated from West Queen Anne Elementary and Queen Anne High School. Subsequently she earned a B.A. degree from Pacific Lutheran College (now PLU) in elementary education, followed by her first teaching position in Mossyrock, WA, and later Seattle Public Schools. While an administrator at the Boeing Company, she met her future husband. Doris married Francis C. Ashleman on November 20, 1948. She was especially proud of her Norwegian heritage, was a passionate gardener and loved to travel, ski, boat, RV and play bridge. Doris was a consummate hostess welcoming friends and family on a regular basis. She was an active member of Maple Leaf Lutheran Church and is a life member of the Queen City Yacht Club Tarettes. Doris resided at the Hearthstone since 2008. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Grace, brother Milton, and by her husband Francis in 1991. Remembrances can be made to the Maple Leaf Lutheran Church or the PLU Scholarship fund. A memorial service will be held at the Queen City Yacht Club at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 10.
