Marie Martin Riel: March 3, 1917 – June 12, 2021
Born in Seattle to Merle and Harry Martin, Marie grew up in West Seattle and attended Jefferson Elementary School, James Madison Junior High and West Seattle High School. Marie also attended the University of Washington where she became a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority. She married Robert Riel in 1950 and later had two daughters; MaryAnn of Seattle and Susan Anderson of San Clemente, CA and husband, John, and one grandchild, Nicole Anderson. Marie also leaves two nieces and families. Marie was active in Girl Scouts, P.T.A. and participated in various activities of her daughters. She was office manager of then, Gene Fiedler Chevrolet and was Human Relations Associate at Sealth High School until her retirement in 1979. Marie and her husband retired to their summer home on Hood Canal. They traveled extensively, enjoyed dancing and spent winters in Palm Desert, CA. Marie kept up her friendships with the Friday Nighters, her sorority group, her Children Orthopedic guild, her bridge groups and the Washington Athletic Club. Marie also volunteered for fourteen years at the Belfair Chamber of Commerce in the Conference Community Program. Donations may be made to favorite charities or Seattle Children’s Hospital at 4800 Sand Point Way N.E., Seattle, WA 98105. Marie was a shining light for over four decades on Hood Canal where she continued to water ski until the age of 80. She had a beautiful and compassionate caregiver and wonderful neighbors whom she loved as family. Marie’s daughter, son in law and granddaughter visited the canal every summer from California in the past twenty years to enjoy family gatherings, water skiing, paddle boarding and swimming. Although she’ll be sorely missed, Marie’s tenacity and quiet inspiration will live in our hearts forever.
