Robert George Grumer, known to many simply as Bob, was born in Newark, NJ on March 22, 1956 and died in Seattle on June 17, 2021. He was a kind, intelligent, and generous man with a wonderful sense of humor – by turns witty, goofy, or sardonic. In both his professional and personal lives, Bob was a caregiver. He helped thousands of people over the course of over thirty years as a psychiatrist. To Bob, family was the most important thing. He loved his wife and children intensely, and was loved profoundly by them in return.
Bob grew up in Los Angeles with his father Morris, a social worker; his mother Helen, a teacher; and two older brothers, Elliott and Carl. He treasured his relationship with his mother, whom he remained close to until her death in 2016. Bob studied psychology at UCLA. He then attended medical school at Des Moines University, graduating in 1985. The next year, while doing his residency in psychiatry in Phoenix, he met Barbara, whom he married in 1988. In 1990, they moved to Tacoma, where Bob took a job as a psychiatrist at Group Health (later Kaiser Permanente). He worked there for the next three decades. They had two children, Elizabeth and Charles. Although their marriage ended after seventeen years, they remained friends and partners in parenting. In 2006, Bob met Shari, whom he loved deeply and with whom he was very happy. They married in 2011 and celebrated their ten-year wedding anniversary in May. Through his marriage to Shari, Bob gained two daughters, Amanda and Elizabeth, whom he loved and helped to raise. In 2019, Bob become a proud grandfather with the birth of Amanda’s son, Emmett.
Bob is survived by his wife, Shari Luchino; his children, Elizabeth and Charles; his stepdaughters, Amanda (her husband, Marcus) and Elizabeth; his grandson, Emmett; his brothers, Elliott and Carl (his wife, Janet); and his beloved dog, Jackson.
