Shirley was born in Parsons, Kansas on December 12, 1931, shortly before the beginning of the great depression. Memories of frugality and hardship during the depression would influence the rest of her life. Shirley also grew up during the rationing years of World War II which she had many stories about, including gas rationing, going on summer vacations to Colorado, and her Father's 'Victory Garden'. Shirley's family moved to different cities in Kansas while she was growing up, but she graduated from Topeka High School in 1949.
Shirley moved to Seattle after graduating from the University of Indiana when she was in her 20's and got a teaching degree from the University of Washington. She taught Physical Education at two different school districts in Washington State for several years before marrying Wade C. Vaughn in June of 1959. Wade built a home for them to live in and raise their children, in the Leschi neighborhood of Seattle where she enjoyed being part of the community as well as the lovely views of Lake Washington and Mount Rainier. Shirley and Wade have two daughters, Jeanette and Sharon, and a son Russel who died in infancy. Shirley and Wade had 48 loving years of marriage together until Wade passed away in 2017.
Shirley's mother Temple Cory owned and operated the 'Health-Glo Foods' store on Broadway in the Capitol Hill Neighborhood during the 1970's where Shirley assisted her Mother and worked part time while her daughters were still small. Nutrition and a healthy lifestyle were always important and she and her husband were avid hikers and travelers during their life together. In her later years she walked for an hour each day, had a routine of stretching and strengthening exercises in the morning and was always careful about eating a healthy diet. Religious life was also important to Shirley and she attended either Protestant, Unity, or Presbyterian church services all of her life. Later in life she loved being able to live and be surrounded by family at her daughter Jeanette's home where she was a devoted Grandmother to Cassady and Dylan. She enjoyed family gatherings especially during the Holidays, staying informed on current events by reading the Newspaper each morning, and being able to stay in touch through letter writing with close friends and reading and watching positive and uplifting stories.
Shirley is survived by her two daughters Jeanette and Sharon Vaughn, her grandchildren Cassady and Dylan Coulter, her Son in Law Jeff Aylsworth, and her cats Midnight and Wiley all of whom will forever miss her presence in their lives.
