On the 16th of October, 2013 after a 3 month battle with pancreatic cancer Joe passed away at home peacefully, while hand-in-hand with the love of his life, Uta and his family by his side. He left behind his wife, Uta, after 47 years of marriage; his daughters, Caroline and Kathleen; sons-in-law, Rick and John, two grandchildren, Wolfie and Peyton, sister Patricia, and brothers Colm and Aidan.
Born in Dublin he spent his career as a doctor in the US Army having been stationed in both the United States and Germany, retiring as a colonel after serving 30 years of active duty. He and Uta retired to Washington state to be close to their children and grandchildren.
Joe had a personality larger than life. With a charming Irish accent, he told stories and recited his poetry; he was the center at all gatherings. He was a top notch doctor, loyal husband, devoted father, wonderful brother and a quality friend who made everyone laugh. He loved to travel, fish, ski, play tennis, cricket, squash, and pickleball. He wrote poetry and he played music. A lover of life, and of many things, but he was happiest having a glass of wine on the front porch, or in front of the fire, with family and friends.
