He was born on September 5, 1945, in Ban Lao Souriya, Muong Champhone, Savannakhet Province, Laos. His life began during a difficult period in history, and from an early age he learned the meaning of hardship, resilience, and responsibility. After losing his mother at only five years old, he was forced to grow up quickly and carry burdens far beyond his years.
As a young man, he proudly served in the Royal Lao Air Force and later worked as an Air Traffic Controller at Savannakhet International Airport. During the war years, he demonstrated courage, discipline, and dedication to his country and family.
Following the fall of Laos in 1975, he and his family, like many Lao families seeking safety and hope, crossed the Mekong River into Thailand and lived as refugees before resettling in the United States in 1980.
In America, he rebuilt his life through perseverance and hard work. He worked in several roles throughout his years, including electronics assembly, visual production inspection at Boeing, and later management within private home-care services. His journey reflected the strength, sacrifice, and determination of refugees and immigrants who started over with little but built a future for their families through endurance and faith.
Vary was known for being calm, disciplined, generous, and full of life. He deeply loved his family and friends, especially his children, and always encouraged those around him to believe in themselves. He believed that anything was possible when you put your heart and soul into it.
He maintained a disciplined lifestyle and exercised daily, earning the affectionate nickname “Little Hulk” from family and friends. He also valued knowledge and self-improvement, often spending time reading and studying the English dictionary every day. His determination, curiosity, and positive outlook inspired many throughout his life.
Above all else, he was a devoted father, grandfather, partner, brother, and family man who loved deeply and supported his family in every endeavor. His legacy lives on through his surviving family: Hatsady Phouthavong, Vipakone Phouthavong, Niphaphone Phouthavong, Chan Phouthavong, Chanh Southavong, Bobby Southavong, and Annie Southavong, along with many extended family members and loved ones whose lives he touched throughout his journey.
Though his path was not always easy, it was marked by perseverance, sacrifice, strength, and love. His memory will continue through the generations he helped shape and the lives he uplifted.
Today, we remember him with gratitude, respect, and love.
May his spirit rest in eternal peace, and may his memory remain a source of strength and guidance in our hearts forever.
