Vern was number five out of the eight children Benjamin and Belle Van Heyningen raised on Carpenter Street in Chicago. He was born June 19, 1923 and lived 92 years. He attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids but WWII interrupted his college career for a few years where he served in the US Army to become what was called a "90-day-wonder" 2nd Lieutenant in the army medical corps. Vern then graduated from the University of Illinois with a masters in aeronautical engineering in 1951 and a love for flying airplanes. He worked on many interesting projects for Boeing's military division and space program until 1990. Vern was very dedicated in serving the Christian Reformed Church and Watson Groen Christian School (Shoreline Christian School). His organizational skills were extraordinary.
He married Sena Devries from Lynden, WA in 1960. Their love for each other grew stronger for the 55 years they had together. Following the stroke that ultimately ended his time here, Vern's family gathered at his side to share in the love he showed us all. His family includes Sena, their daughter Lisa, son Phillip (& Lorrie), grandson Dustin (& Nina), Jacey (& Cory) and last but not least, Hannah. Sena and Lisa stayed by his bedside until he left this life behind to go home to the God and Father he loved with all of his heart.
Vern's patience, kindness and humble spirit were remarkable and will be remembered by those who knew him as a living example of a faithful Christian man who served others before himself.
Memorial service will be at 2:00 Saturday, October 10th, at First Christian Reform Church, Shoreline, WA.
