Born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, he grew up in the Heights section and graduated from Dickinson High School in 1960. During his high school years, he was a standout athlete, excelling on both the baseball and basketball teams.
Following graduation, he attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, where he earned his degree with honors. After working briefly as a pharmacist, he continued his education to pursue his true calling in medicine, graduating with honors from the Des Moines College of Osteopathic Medicine.
After completing medical school, Dr. Rotella established a private practice on Summit Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey. He later served as an attending physician at Christ Hospital. For more than 50 years, he was a highly respected and deeply dedicated physician, known for his compassion, tireless work ethic, and devotion to his patients and community. He was an old-school doctor in every sense—making house calls, remaining available to his patients at any hour, and providing care with integrity, patience, and genuine concern.
Dr. Rotella was predeceased by his beloved parents, Pasquale and Erminia Rotella; his cherished sister, Rita (Rotella) DelPiano, and her husband, Gerard DelPiano; his dear brother, Anthony Rotella; and his son, Joseph Perrenod, who passed away in 2012. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Omy Rotella, and his devoted children: Francesco Rotella and his wife, Jennifer; Patrick Rotella and his wife, Ursula; and Frankie Rotella and his wife, Jessica. He was a proud and adoring grandfather to twelve grandchildren, each of whom brought immeasurable joy, pride, and happiness to his life.
He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Orlando Alvarez Sr., and his nephew, Orlando Alvarez Jr., as well as many extended family members, close friends, and loved ones who will forever cherish his memory and the profound impact he had on their lives.
Despite the long hours and demands of his profession, Dr. Rotella always made time for his family. He could often be found proudly attending countless sporting events, school activities, and important milestones in the lives of his children and grandchildren. Over the years, he supported each of his children in their chosen careers, offering guidance, wisdom, and unwavering encouragement. His ability to balance healing others while remaining fully present for his family was one of his greatest strengths.
Throughout his life, he held many titles that meant the world to those who loved him-husband, brother, father, grandfather, godfather, uncle, doctor, mentor, and friend—and he fulfilled each role with devotion, generosity, and love.
His life was well lived, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
